How do I open a docx email attachment?

Q: How do I open a docx attachment? It looks like a Word document, but I can’t open it.

I have Microsoft Office 2003 on my computer. But if i try to open a docx attachment, I get this error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

A: Your friend has Office 2007  or 2010, and has sent you the document in docx format, which earlier versions of Word cannot open

You can download and install a converter to which enables earlier versions of Word to open docx files.

This converter is the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. The compatibility pack works with Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003, and will enable you to open documents created in Office 2007 or 2010

NB : Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—should install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

If you have Office 2007 or 2010 it sounds like the file association is broken – it needs to be re-established.

Try the solution in this article

“These problems occur when the association between the file and the corresponding application is missing.”
